The Journey

In 2004, local artist and cancer survivor Tom Talbot did something extraordinary
that few of us could ever do.

He painted a beautiful landscape in oil that related to his own journey with cancer.  And
then he donated it to the Savannah River Cancer Foundation to raise funds to help those
in need.

About Artist Tom Talbot

Vibrant colors and muted shades; multitudes of textures so visible you want to run

your fingers over them; standing at several distances to ensure you don’t miss any

detail, and knowing that when you take in this vision-in-oil as a whole, you will be

reminded of  a wonderful place you saw ‘somewhere’.

Tom Talbot and his wife Ginger chose Aiken for its beauty and charm as their home

in 1999.  Although Tom is still painting and traveling to galleries for shows, he claims

that he has retired.  Both Tom and Ginger were born and raised in Nebraska and

have made their home in the American Southwest, including Santa Fe, New Mexico,

and Prescott, Arizona.  The Talbots have an adventurous side that has lent itself to

extensive travel over the years throughout the United States and in Europe, North

Africa, the Orient, Canada, and Mexico.

Tom began studying art in 1954 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He is a

graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago.  He realized, after working

as a commercial artist and art director, that his love of painting was pure and free

flowing, not a commodity to be produced ‘on demand’.  He later studied at the Art

Students League of NYC in Madison, Connecticut with Robert Brackman, and at

the Bellas Artes, San Miguel de Allende in Mexico

Tom has been affiliated with galleries internationally and across the United States

His work is also displayed in private and institutional collections throughout the

United States and in England, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, Nigeria, Japan,

Mexico and Canada.

Thank you Tom!

Retta Cameron was the lucky winner of the original oil landscape
 "The Journey" by Tom Talbot
Drawn December 15, 2004

On Wednesday evening, Dec. 15, 2004, the Savannah River Cancer Foundation organization gathered at the Cancer Care Institute of Carolina for a holiday celebration of thanks to dedicated volunteers and health care professionals who  helped the organization in its infancy.

The highlight of the evening was the drawing for a $5,000 original oil painting by cancer survivor and professional artist Tom Talbot.

Talbot has called Aiken his home for 8 years and said his painting, which was named "The Journey," related to the light and shadows of his own struggle with cancer.  "I had just been through chemotherapy," Talbot said while looking at the work, which depicts a dirt road running through a country scene.

Aiken resident Retta Cameron was drawn as the winner of the work, which was framed by Southside Gallery.

A  total of $3,000 in raffle tickets were sold. The proceeds were used to aid programs for cancer patients.

Congratulations Retta Cameron
